Cause and Cure: the greening of IT

October 29th, 2009 by Nuala Moran

There’s always a bright side for the information technology sector. The world’s computers may be throwing out wasted heat when active, consuming electricity on stand by and polluting the environment when dumped, but the industry is now on a mission to save the planet, with the advent of Green IT.
The Green IT Expo http://www.revolutionevents.plus.com/greenitexpo/latest_news.htm taking place in London next week, will hear about new opportunities for IT vendors to help companies reduce the environmental impact of their computer systems.
Apart from making computers more energetically efficient, IT can help reduce carbon dioxide emissions through remote working and virtual collaboration systems.
But its greatest potential contribution, according to keynote speaker Warren Wilson, senior analyst at the market research firm, Ovum, lies in, “Its ability to quantify, monitor, control and report on the environmental impact of every corner of an organisation.”
